Andalusia Water TankAbout Your Water
The Utilities Board of the City of Andalusia Water Department currently serves 4,900 customers throughout the city limits and parts of the county. It takes an average of 2,088,000 gallons of water per day to serve our customers. We have nine wells and six elevated storage tanks to ensure water supply is readily available on demand. The water system has evolved into a much larger technologically advanced system since the first water system that was constructed in the early 1900s. The original system only served the downtown area and surrounding residential areas. This department is continually upgrading water lines, wells and storage tanks to ensure the best quality of water and services to its customers.

Our water source is groundwater drawn from nine wells. Two wells draw from the Tuscahoma Sands/Hatchetigbee aquifer, four wells draw from the Nanafalia aquifer and three wells draw from the Clayton Limestone aquifer. Waterworks personnel routinely monitor the water supply to make sure that your drinking water is safe and meets all federal and state requirements.

Energy Conservation Tips

Soaring fuel costs have become an unfortunate reality for our nation. We feel the effects at the gas pump, grocery store and in almost every other aspect of our daily lives. The Andalusia Utilities Board is also affected by rising fuel costs, especially the cost of natural gas used for electricity generation. We share your concerns about high fuel prices and encourage everyone to help reduce energy bills by implementing these simple energy conservation methods.

Planned Outages

The Andalusia Utilities Board works to provide the most reliable services for our customers by making improvements and repairs to our electrical, water and sewer systems. Occasionally, these improvements or repairs will require that your electric or water service be temporarily disconnected. In planning these outages, we work with the local newspaper, television, and radio to alert you of any planned outages. We appreciate your patience during these times as improvements to the electrical and water systems mean more quality service for you, our customer.

Safety Tips

Power Lines Safety

Play it safe. Power lines bring electricity from generating plants to our communities and into our homes. They are a vital part of the electrical transmission and distribution system. They can also be dangerous.

Surge Protection

Plan now to protect your valuable computer and home entertainment equipment from the damage lightning and power surges might cause. The Andalusia Utilities office features a Whole Home Surge Suppression program that includes a meter base device and individual plug-in devices, which can be used throughout your home.

How our Program Works

We offer the most effective power quality equipment on the market today. Our program offers a two-stage approach to protecting your valuable equipment. First, the primary form of protection consists of a meter base device placed at the service entrance of your home. Secondly, we offer individual devices that are placed throughout your home are designed to protect your more sensitive electronic equipment such as computers, TVs, and microwaves.

Benefits of our Program:

  • Designed to save appliances from damage.
  • Gives you peace of mind when you're away from home on vacation or at work.
  • Each one of our devices come with a comprehensive warranty.

Riverside WastewaterThe Riverside Wastewater Treatment Facility was constructed in 1987 and is located on Rabren Road. This facility serves the entire population of Andalusia and treats both domestic and industrial wastes. The treatment facility is an extended aeration modification of the activated sludge process and provides secondary treatment. The design capacity of the facility is 2.84 MGD.  Wastewater flows by gravity through the collection system to the treatment facility. There are twenty-four pumping stations located throughout Andalusia to lift the wastewater of low terrain areas where the wastewater will no longer flow by gravity. The entire wastewater flow enters a wet well located on the southwest portion of the plant site. The wastewater is then pumped through three stainless steel fine mesh static screens. The flow continues through the screens leaving behind waste particles which are too large to pass through the screens. The wastewater then enters two oxidation ditches where it is continually mixed with oxygen and activated sludge by propeller mixers and fine bubble diffusers. The mixing and oxidation promote bacterial growth, which stabilizes the waste matter. The activated sludge enters the rear of the boat clarifiers located in the ditches. The flow is slowed enough in the boats so that the solids settle to the bottom of the boats and are returned to the oxidation ditch through the ports located at the bottom of the clarifiers. Excess activated sludge may be pumped from the boat clarifiers to be applied to the sludge drying beds as required. The clear water exiting over a weir (barrier) in the front of the boat clarifiers is now ready for the final treatment process. As the effluent water passes through aparshallflume it is chlorinated to kill any pathogens. The flow rate is also electronically measured at this point in theparshallflume. Dissolved oxygen is now added as it flows down a cascade aerator. The effluent water must be dechlorinated through the injection of sulfur dioxide. At this point, it is ready to enter the Conecuh River.
