The City of Andalusia facilitates the sales of commemorative bricks to be placed in the Covington Veterans Memorial on the campus of Andalusia City Hall.

The City of Andalusia has several special Boards/Committees that serve to provide decisions for various needs in the City. These groups consist of local citizens and politicians who are very much interested in our community.

Below is a list of these Boards/Committees with a description of what they do. If you are interested in knowing more about these, please contact us.

  • Andalusia Public Library Board serves in an advisory role for the director of the Andalusia Public Library. The council appoints the five members of this board, which meets quarterly.
  • Board of Zoning Adjustments hears and decides appeals and special exceptions of the Andalusia Zoning Ordinance. The Andalusia City Council appoints five members to serve three-year terms. The board meets as needed.
  • Capital Improvement Cooperative District is a three-member board that reinvests proceeds of the district tax in ways that further build retail growth in Andalusia. The board meets at 10:30 a.m. on the third Thursday of each month.
  • Community Enhancement Committee makes recommendations to the City Council concerning the development and beautification of segments of the community.The council appoints the nine members of this board.
  • Downtown Redevelopment Authority was formed for the acquisition, ownership, lease, sale, lending and other disposition of property for the redevelopment and revitalization of the central business district of Andalusia. Five members serve three-year terms.
  • Historical Preservation Authority undertakes studies and surveys and works to restore, acquire or operate property listed in the National Register of Historic Places. There are three members of this board.
  • Housing Authority administers public housing programs. There are five members of this board.
  • Industrial Development Board has the authority to let bonds for the purchase of land, buildings or equipment for local industries. There are seven members of this board, which meets when issues related to industrial development arise.
  • Planning Commission provides planning, zoning and subdivision controls for the City of Andalusia, based upon the City’s Comprehensive Plan. This nine-member board meets at 5:15 p.m. on the second Thursday of each month.
  • Public Education Building Authority
  • Recreation Board is responsible for the direction, supervision and promotion of programs that will contribute to the general welfare of the residents of Andalusia. There are six members of this board.
  • South Alabama Regional Airport Authority sets policies and procedures for the operation of the South Alabama Regional Airport (SARA). The City of Andalusia appoints one member to the four-member board, which meets monthly.
  • South Central Alabama Mental Health Board serves in an advisory capacity to South Central Alabama Mental Health. The City of Andalusia appoints three members to six-year terms on the 39-member board. The meets at noon on every fourth Thursday except in October. A public meeting is held on the third Thursday of October at 2 p.m.
  • Tourism and Relocation Committee formulates advertising and promotional programs to attract retirees and others to the community. There are seven members of the board.
  • Utilities Board  sets policies and procedures for the operations of the city’s utilities functions, including electric, water, sewerage and wastewater treatment. The board meets at noon on the third Thursday of each month.

The Electricians Examining Board was created March 19, 1963. The board thoroughly and carefully examines all applicants for certification of capacity. One or more members of the Examining Board shall supervise such examinations, but no certificate shall be granted, nor denied, without the approval and sanction of a majority of the members of said Examining Board. Examinations may be given in writing or on practical work, or both, as may be deemed most advisable by said Board.

Andalusia Public LibraryThe Andalusia Public Library Board was created November 1, 1966. Its purpose is to serve as the governing body for the city’s public library. The Andalusia Public Library Board consists of five members who are appointed by the City Council of Andalusia. Each member serves a term of four years. They meet at 4:00 p.m. on the third Wednesday of odd months in the Charles Dixon Memorial Room of the Library, South Three Notch Street.
